New drawings of Nepenthes plants! 7.21.2019

Drawing of my Nepenthes Spathulata. Here's a few facts: N. Spathulata is native to Java and Sumatra, where it grows at elevations of between 3,600 and 9,500 feet above sea level. It is listed as Vunerable by IUCN.  I purchased my actual plant last year from: https://www.californiacarnivores.com

Drawing of the Nepenthes Bicalcarata. Not my Bicalcarata sadly. It is on my wish list one day though. This was inspired by a picture of one in the wild (photographer unknown).

Here are some interesting facts about the N. Bicalcarata: it is also known as the fanged pitcher-plant and is highly coveted and admired. It's endemic to northwestern Borneo, Indonesia. It is noted for its mutualistic association with a species of Carpenter ant (Camponotus schmitzi) that nests in the plants hollow tendrils. As an ant-fed plant it lacks many of the features that characterize the carnivorous nature in Nepenthes, including viscoelastic and highly alkaline pitcher fluid, the waxy zone of the pitcher interior, and possibly even functional digestive enzymes. The ants assist with cleaning the peristomes of the plants, feeding on some of the unfortunate insects that fall into the pitchers and likely some of the ants themselves fall victim to the Bicalcarata.
The N. Bicalcarata is a true lowland plant and often found amongst the Ampullaria.
